Hypertension Control Program
Phase II (January 01, 2021 to August 31, 2022)
The program will be conducted in collaboration with NCDC Program, Directorate of Health Services of Government of Bangladesh in 54 sub-districts of Sylhet, Dhaka and Mymensingh division. A tripartite MoU among NCDC, DGHS, NHFB and RTSL has been signed to continue the current pilot program and scale up to other sub-districts which will be an important step in implementation of the multi-sectoral action plan for NCD control adopted by Government of Bangladesh. The population size in each subdistricts (Upazila) range from 200,000 to 400,000. Primary health care services are delivered by 50-bed Upazila Health Complex (UZHC) and number of Union Health Centers (UHC) (7 to 9) and Community Clinics (CC) (26 to 34) in each of the sub-districts. Estimated population of the program area is about 14,742,306 with adult population of 9,729,922 and estimated hypertensive people of about 2,043,284 will be covered by this program. Sadar sub-district is sub-districts which have administrative areas encompassing district headquarter areas. In general, in a district headquarter is considered urban area and a government district hospital serve the population for both primary and secondary care. However, they are directly supervised by Civil surgeon, head of district health service and not considered as primary care center.

National heart foundation of Bangladesh has been relentlessly working for prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases for a long time. The institute has now taken up “Strengthening of Hypertension Detection, Treatment and Follow-up at PHC system: A Pilot Project in Bangladesh”.
This project is in collaboration with DGHS Bangladesh and currently being conducted in four Upazilas of Sylhet district (upazila health complexes and community clinics in

RESOLVE to Save Lives: Hypertension Control Program has high potential for increasing community level hypertension control rate and thus contribution to reduction of disability and premature deaths. Lessons learned can be applied for scaling up the program nationally.
